The Bunker

Australian Made

Engineered for Safety First

Downunder Bunkers are purpose-designed and fire-engineered to perform in harsh Australian bushfire conditions. Developed using advanced fire and thermal modelling, the design integrates carefully selected materials, insulation, and internal systems to maintain structural integrity, internal survivability, and environmental control in extreme fire events.

Fully Underground Protection

Installed entirely underground beneath a minimum of one metre of compacted earth and insulation, the bunker provides superior protection from radiant heat, direct flame exposure, and ember attack. The underground design delivers exceptional thermal stability, with internal temperatures remaining largely unchanged even under extreme external conditions, while maintaining a minimal surface footprint and preserving usable land.

Actively Ventilated and Certified

Unlike passive systems, Downunder Bunkers utilise an active ventilation system powered by solar and dual internal batteries, supplying fresh air and lighting for safe, extended occupancy. The system is nationally certified, internationally recognised through full CMI certification, and protected by Australian and New Zealand patents, providing a reliable defend-in-place solution for bushfire preparedness.

Built to Suit Your Site

The standard Downunder Bunker is designed with a length of 3.8 metres and is engineered and certified to safely accommodate up to 16 occupants when used as a bushfire emergency shelter. This certified capacity applies specifically to fire emergency use and reflects the bunker’s compliance with applicable structural and performance requirements. In addition to the standard model, Down Under Bunkers offers custom‑made solutions, with bunkers able to be manufactured shorter or longer to suit individual site conditions and customer requirements. Customisation allows flexibility while maintaining the core design principles of strength, safety, and performance.
